Our republic is held together and works due to the separation of powers between the three branches of our government and most importantly by the respect that the three branches have for the responsibilities of their branch and the authority and responsibilities of the other branches. The executive branch under President Trump shows no respect for the other branches of government, and his recent pressure on the Ukraine president to investigate a potential American democratic nominee for president is clearly an abuse of power.
