Opinion: A pleasant encounter at the grocery store

We encountered one another in the cereal aisle — two middle-aged gents stocking their larders for the weekend. We exchanged pleasantries and moved to the checkout lane together.

Imagine my surprise when he waved off my effort to pay with my credit card and told the clerk to put my purchases (there weren’t many) on his bill.

My “thank yous” were met with “God bless you” and a smile.

That got me to thinking — how easy for even total strangers to connect with only a little effort.  Thanks for the reminder, my anonymous friend. I will pass it along to the next stranger I meet.  In the meantime, God bless you.
