Letter: Defense of Trump, Kavanaugh are examples of pure political tribalism
02012018 LETTER

Tribalism is destroying our democracy and Gary Gambrell’s letter of Sept. 28 is a glaring example. Equally distressing is the performance of the judge Brett Kavanaugh and the Senate Judiciary Committee at the hearings Thursday.

Mr. Gambrell cherry-picks the numbers and incidents to prove that “Democrats bad; Republicans good.” The Democrats can correctly say that the majority of Americans voted against Donald Trump and that an archaic, unfair, election format created more than 200 years ago by a group of rich, white guys (some of whom owned slaves) put Trump in the White House.

The Democrats can also correctly say that when Barack Obama took office in 2009, the country had been in a negative GDP through most of Republican President George W. Bush’s final two years. It took a Democratic president to get us out of this recession, just as Franklin Roosevelt did in the 1930s.

Trump is enjoying the fruits of Obama policies, but I fear his “shoot from the hip” economics will soon catch up with us. For example, China is imposing tariffs on American farm products, but Trump will scrape up $50 million (from somewhere) to help out our farmers.

As for the Kavanaugh circus, the Judiciary Committee should have called for an FBI investigation of the claims of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and the denials of Judge Kavanaugh. His tirade about the unfair treatment he received at the hands of the Democrats makes his claim that he is a reasonable, fair “umpire of the law” laughable. Kavanaugh is unfit to be a Supreme Court justice, and the groundswell against his nomination (from the American Bar Association, among others) should be considered.
