I was truly saddened by The Times death announcement of WDUN’s Jerry Gunn. He had a following that was akin to none, a funny man with a dry sense of humor. I dearly enjoyed his company.
For a number of years while serving on the Chamber’s Beautification Committee, it was my pleasure to provide refreshments for those attending the Arbor Day programs. From my first event to the last, Jerry was always my best “taster of the cheese chips.” He loved the cheese chips.
He would stop by as he entered the Arbor Day room and he could be found at the table following the program, always with a handful of those tasty little morsels. It became such a normal activity, one year I made extra cheese chips and boxed them especially for him. His eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store. That is the type of man your remember with fondness and respect.
Jerry was always on top and in the midst of the issues. He has been a missed figure taking notes or doing interviews at meetings and events since his departure from WDUN. He would seek commentary on issues, but only if you felt comfortable, he was never pushy or persuasive when putting his mic in front of someone. Jerry was a genuine, “one of a kind.”
Funny how simple things like cheese chips will be a reminder of the dearest people.
