Please note first: I’m a lifelong, avid football fan. Note secondly that I greatly admire those who dedicate their lives to teaching, as my wife Sandra did so ardently and devotedly for 26 years.

So I am disturbed when I read the “good news” that public school teachers in Georgia will get a 2 percent raise — at the same time I read about a linebacker for the New England Patriots football team getting a four-year contract for $43.5 million.

This reflects our vastly distorted value system, in my judgment.
