Letter: Hall tax office doesnt collect personal data

Many residents have contacted me regarding collection, use and ultimate security of confidential personal information in the Tax Commissioner Office. Specifically, the inquiry is on the collection of Social Security numbers to conduct business in our office, which has been brought to awareness by press coverage of the recent unintentional release of such by another county in Georgia. Rest assured, we do not collect Social Security numbers to fulfill our responsibilities.

The tax commissioner is an elected constitutional officer responsible for every phase in the collection of property tax due to the state, county, municipalities and school systems. The oath I take upholds the Constitution of the United States and directs me to faithfully and appropriately discharge the duties of the office.

Our office has two main services:

Property tax. I am responsible for billing, collection and distribution of ad valorem tax based on property tax values.

Motor Vehicle Administration. I am an agent for the state of Georgia for titling and registration of motor vehicles.

I am honored to be your tax commissioner and I appreciate the opportunity to serve you. Our office wishes you a healthy and prosperous new year.
