Editorial: A vote for a new way to pick a president
Better plan needed to negate electoral, popular vote disparities, but dont hold your breath for it

New York State electoral college members cast votes Dec. 16, 1940, at the state capital in Albany, N.Y. The Founding Fathers set up the Electoral College to ensure a well-informed, geographically diverse group of electors would choose the nation’s presidents, not a mere popular vote tally.
The nation’s 45th president will be elected Monday. Yes, we all thought we did that Nov. 8. But those votes actually were cast for state electors, who in turn choose the candidate who won the popular vote in their particular states.
