Vincent Melillo is a celebrity in his own right.Even at the age of 93, he makes frequent trips away from his home in Columbus to talk about his experience as a World War II Merrill’s Marauder and Korean War 5th Regimental Combat Team veteran.Although Melillo’s 94th birthday is Monday, he isn’t slowing down yet.Melillo and his daughter, Jonnie Clasen, visited the North Georgia Airborne Association’s meeting Saturday to share war stories with his airborne brothers, including Melillo’s experiences in the China, Burma and India theater during World War II and meeting his wife, Frankie, at Georgia’s Camp Wheeler.“We met when the guy in front of me asked for pie a la mode, but Frankie didn’t know what ‘a la mode’ meant. I had to tell her it was ice cream,” Melillo explained to listeners. They were together ever since. In addition to the guest speaker, the seventh official meeting of the North Georgia Airborne Association included a food drive for local Gainesville veterans and a family cookout.Although still in its early stages, the group hopes to bring together fellow paratroopers from across the Northeast Georgia region for fellowship, new friendships and support of other local veterans.Gary Weller, the association’s historian and active member, acknowledged something special about his friend and guest speaker, Melillo.“We stayed up until midnight telling stories last night, and we finally got tired and went to bed,” Weller said with a laugh.
