A 72-year-old woman was killed Monday morning in a head-on collision in northeastern Forsyth County.

The wreck, the county’s first fatality of the year, occurred about 9:45 a.m. on Keith Bridge Road. Authorities identified the woman as Ruby Peckham of Brookshire Road.

According to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s report, Peckham’s 2004 Chevrolet Impala was struck by a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by 18-year-old Cory Thomas Esco of Holbrook Road.

The report said Esco was traveling east on Keith Bridge when “for reasons unknown at this time, the Explorer crossed the centerline and collided head-on” with the Impala.

Esco was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Shelton said there were no passengers in either vehicle and it was raining heavily at the time.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.

The road was shut down for nearly three hours as a result of the collision.
