Lawmakers have made the case for medical marijuana over the past year by limiting the number of patients who can legally possess and use the drug to the families of children with seizure disorders.

But state Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon, the bill’s lead sponsor, has said that legislation would include immunity for patients to use cannabis oil with less than 5 percent THC if they have been diagnosed with certain conditions, such as cancer, glaucoma, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, PTSD and autism, among others.

“All of these medical conditions have seen positive results from cannabis oil,” Peake said in a statement.

But expanding the patient pool could jeopardize the bill’s success this year.
