Why some people could see reduced water bills

People who live outside the city of Gainesville could soon see lower water bills.

People who live outside Gainesville city limits are charged twice as much as city residents for their base water rate. Gainesville Water Resources is proposing lowering the multiplier to 1.9.

Linda MacGregor, director of Gainesville Water Resources, said that the average residential customer can expect a savings of about $1.50 a month with the change.

“The City Council felt it was the right time for the reduction since (the multiplier) has been at 2.0 for a long time and the system is becoming more integrated,” MacGregor said.

The Gainesville City Council will vote to approve the rate change on Tuesday. If approved, the change would go into effect with bills sent out after Sept. 1.
