Two women battling cancer stand to benefit from fundraisers this weekend.
Students at Da Vinci Academy in South Hall, with the school's help, have organized a 5-kilometer run for Karen Moon, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago and was scheduled for major surgery today.
And Lanier Corvettes Unlimited and Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta are sponsoring a vehicle show and auction in Buford for Tiffany Haley Williams, who is in Texas taking treatments for Hodgkin's disease.
The Moon fundraiser is set for 8 a.m. Saturday at the school, which is at 3215 Poplar Springs Road.
The race costs $25 per person and each runner or walker will receive a T-shirt.
The event took off because a few students had heard that a classmate's mother was dealing with the disease.
"I was just amazed at how ... these kids saw a friend's family in need (and) ... wanted to help in such a big way," said Pam Balenger, mother of one of the classmate's friends.
Moon appreciates the help and how the event got organized.
"I thought it was awesome, just wonderful," she said, speaking from work on Tuesday.
Moon said finding out she had cancer "was a shock because I've never been sick." The good news is that doctors believe the disease is in its early stages.
Also, a biopsy of her lymph nodes showed no signs of cancer.
She said she is relying on her faith in God and "knowing he's going to take care of me through this."
The family has endured other adversity this year.
Moon's daughter, Lydia, was in a church van following another van that was involved in a June 9 wreck in Kentucky. The accident, which injured two adult leaders and three teenagers, took place on a mission trip in Kentucky.
"We've gone through a lot," Moon said.
Williams, who lived in Murrayville before moving to Houston, discovered she had Hodgkin's disease six years ago. She recalled the early symptoms of exhaustion, anemia and having a "weird cough."
"I finally went to the doctor and she did so many tests that day," she said.
Williams, 27, and her husband, Bryan, have been in Houston for several months while she undergoes extensive chemotherapy treatments at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
"It's going well. I've gotten positive responses from my treatments and my testing," she said. "... I'm preparing for a bone marrow transplant and we're trying to get insurance to pay for it, so that's kind of stressful."
The vehicle show, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Home Depot off Ga. 20 in Buford, will help the couple with expenses.
The event is open to all types of vehicles, including motorcycles and pickup trucks, with a $20 minimum donation. It also will feature a bake sale, raffle and vendors.
"Tiffany and Bryan have family in both of our clubs, so this joint venture is in an effort to help them down this bumpy road," says the flier for the event.
