Gainesville residents can expect some finicky weather throughout the weekend with high chances of rain today and through the evening and then clear skies Saturday afternoon.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service are expecting a wave of rain and thunder-storms to move through all of North Georgia this afternoon, with possible severe storms in isolated areas.

"A severe storm is one that produces penny size or larger hale, gusty winds in excess of 60 mph, or one that produces a tornado," said Vaughn Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City. "We’re expecting mostly hail, gusty winds and isolated tornadoes."

However, Vaughn said the chances of a tornado are slim.

"The chances (of a tornado) are not as great as hail and high winds," he said.

The storm will be dragging a cold front behind it, though temperatures will not drop until Monday night, Smith said.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-70s through the day today and dip into the upper 50s tonight. Saturday will be more of the same, though a little cooler with temperatures hovering in the mid- to high 60s.

However, it may get icy on Monday.

"We are expecting very cold air to come through here Monday and Tuesday," Smith said.

The cold front is making its way from Canada and will bring temperatures down to the low 30s Monday and Tuesday night, Smith said.
