Here are a few of the observations and events this week marking Veterans Day, which falls on Wednesday.
Today: East Hall High School will hold its first Veterans Day celebration, “The Sound of Freedom — A Tribute to Our Veterans,” at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The event will feature remarks by State Rep. Carl Rogers, a parade of veterans, patriotic music and readings, choral presentations, and a flag folding and presentation ceremony. Admission is free for veterans and $5 for others. Veterans planning to attend are asked to contact Maj. Brad McCanna, with the school’s Navy JROTC program, at 770-536-9921,ext. 3228.
Wednesday: The American Legion Paul E. Bolding Post 7 is sponsoring a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville. The event will feature the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, patriotic songs performed by Maranatha Christian Academy students and remarks by local radio personality Martha Zoller.
Wednesday: Wauka Mountain Elementary School at 5850 Brookton-Lula Road in North Hall plans to hold a reception for veterans from noon to 1 p.m. and a schoolwide assembly at 1 p.m. The assembly will feature the White County Color Guard, a performance by a choir from North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega and keynote speaker Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. The assembly will be followed by a Walk of Honor, in which students and guests will honor veterans as they walk through the hallways.
Wednesday: The 5th Annual Veterans Day Celebration in Dawsonville begins with a parade at 2:30 p.m., starting at the Dawson County Library, and ends with ceremonies at 3:30 p.m. at Dawson County Middle School. Veterans and active military personnel from all wars and branches will be honored, as well as Dawson County law enforcement, fire and emergency services. Contact: Pam Hamalainen, 706-265-6278.
