Parents who want help with getting financial aid for their children are invited to a free event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of North Georgia’s Cumming campus.

Financial aid experts will be available to help families fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the first step in applying for federal and state assistance.

Thursday’s event is a College Goal Georgia event, part of the national College Goal Sunday initiative to help families in need of financial aid, particularly low-income families and families with first-generation college students.

The program is also sponsored by the Georgia Student Finance Commission.

Hundreds of students each year successfully apply for financial aid at the University of North Georgia event. At the university, approximately 84 percent of students receive some financial aid, but nearly 51 percent of students who borrow money still graduate debt free, according to a release from the university.
