Two people were arrested Wednesday morning on charges of stealing metal anchor plates belonging to CSX Railroad, police said.

Gainesville Police Lt. Carol Martin said the anchor plates were piled up next to the railroad tracks at Georgia Avenue and had not yet been installed. The thefts posed no danger to the track’s stability.

A witness called police at about 10:45 a.m. to report seeing two men take the metal plates. He provided police with a description of the suspects and their car.

Police spotted the car on Atlanta Street with two men standing outside it. A search of the car turned up the stolen anchor plates. Taran O. Allen, 25, and Kim Smith, 45, both of Gainesville, were charged with theft by taking.
