The state Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to Gary’s Grading & Pipeline of Lawrenceville for the construction of the final 1.3-mile leg of Thurmon Tanner Parkway in Oakwood.

The project, which will cost $6.7 million, involves extending Thurmon Tanner from Plainview Road to Mundy Mill Road.

Thurmon Tanner now runs as a four-lane between Spout Springs Road in Flowery Branch to Plainview and from Mundy Mill Road to Atlanta Highway.

The project is expected to start in the spring and be completed by Dec. 31, 2010, said Teri Pope, DOT spokeswoman.

Landscaping work on the project is set to be completed by May 31, 2012, Pope said.

The DOT built the stretch of Thurmon Tanner from Mundy Mill Road to Atlanta Highway as part of its $75 million project to rebuild Exit 16 off Interstate 985 and add an interchange at Atlanta Highway.

That project is set for a February 2010 completion.
