Several counties in Northeast Georgia are under a severe thunderstorm watch this afternoon and tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued the watch until 10 pm. for the northern third of the state, including Hall, Banks, Barrow, Dawson, Forsyth, Habersham, Jackson, Lumpkin, Rabun, Towns, Union and White counties.

The isolated storms can produce heavy winds and frequent lightning, and residents are urged to take precautions when they appear.

A heat advisory also remains in effect statewide as heat indices rise into the mid-90s this afternoon.
