Members of the Gwinnett County Swiftwater Rescue Team plucked four men from a rock in the middle of the Chattahoochee River near Bowman’s Island in Buford on Saturday evening.

Firefighters responded at 7 p.m. after a 911 call via a transfer from Forsyth County, according to Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

The caller said the men, who were reportedly fishing, were unable to cross the river back to the bank due to the strong current and rising waters.

First responders were unable to get close enough to communicate with the men and notified the Swiftwater Rescue Team.

The Swiftwater team deployed a boat and was able to gain access to the men and take them to shore at Lower Pool Park, Rutledge said.

No one was hurt.

Rutledge said firefighters encourage rivergoers to pay attention to the changing river conditions and to avoid being on the river during generation times at Buford Dam.
