Suspects sought in attempted robbery of taxi driver

Gainesville police are investigating a late-night attempt to rob a local taxi driver, according to reports.

The department’s investigation surrounds a report from a Uni-Taxi driver that he was struck in the head with a handgun after driving two men to the intersection of Mill Street and Patricia Drive at about 2 a.m. Thursday, according to a report from Gainesville Sgt. Johnny Ray.

The taxi driver told police that when he drove the two men to the intersection, one man exited the taxi and the other stayed inside of the taxi. Both men then showed the taxi driver their handguns, and according to reports, the man inside the taxi struck the taxi driver in the head with his gun before both fled the scene.

The victim described his assailants as two black men. One, in a black T-shirt, about the age of 25, was about 6 feet tall and of medium build. The other man wore similar clothing and a cloth over his face, according to the report.
