A man wanted on a murder warrant out of White County was captured by a SWAT team Wednesday morning.
Frederick Sauder, 27, was arrested at the Travel Inn on West Broad Street in Athens. He was wanted in alleged connection to the death of Wayne Alexander, 66, of Cleveland.
White County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Bob Ingram said Alexander was “shot and killed in his residence.”
The Winder Police Department notified the Athens-Clarke County Police Department about a license plate reader noticing Sauder’s vehicle.
“The vehicle was reportedly traveling east on Atlanta Highway toward Athens,” Athens-Clarke County Police wrote on Facebook. “Further information indicated that Sauder was also in possession of a rifle.”
Officers reportedly found Sauder’s vehicle in the Travel Inn parking lot and made the arrest before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
“Officers established a perimeter around the hotel and evacuated guests who were staying in nearby hotel rooms,” according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Facebook post. “Mr. Sauder was uncooperative with negotiators, who attempted to talk him out of his room.”
Officers used a “distractive device and chemical munitions” to take Sauder into custody. He has since been turned over to the White County Sheriff’s Office.`
