A Gainesville man was captured and arrested on numerous charges Monday night after allegedly fleeing from sheriff’s deputies in a car and later on foot, authorities said.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, Johnny Ray Tanner, 41, was driving a Ford truck on Beverly Road near Limestone Parkway when deputies tried to pull him over, Hall County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Ware said. Tanner was wanted on outstanding warrants for a probation violation, criminal trespass and shoplifting, Ware said.

Tanner led deputies on a short, half-mile chase before abandoning the truck behind a business on Limestone Parkway and running into some nearby woods, Ware said.

Tanner managed to evade authorities in the woods for three hours before a police tracking dog located him, Ware said.

Authorities later determined the truck was stolen, he said.

In addition to the outstanding warrants, Tanner was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of an officer, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, fleeing and eluding an officer, no proof of insurance and theft by receiving stolen vehicle.

He remains in the Hall County Jail.
