An island fire far from the mainland that attracted numerous complaints led to a Georgia State Patrol training exercise on how to drop water from above, authorities said. The fire on the Lake Lanier island has been visible to people near the American Legion Paul E. Bolding Post 7 on Riverside Drive and on Thompson Bridge Road. It had been smoldering for the past few days.
