Gwinnett County investigators said Monday they believe the skull and bones found in a suitcase Friday along Interstate 985 belong to a woman who died about six months ago.

A Georgia Department of Transportation worker discovered the human remains Friday morning when he walked “into the woods to relieve himself,” police said. The remains were found north of Buford Drive.

After some examination by the medical examiner’s office, authorities said they believe the bones belong to a woman between 20 and 30 years old. The woman may be either mixed race or Hispanic, police said.

“Based on the decomposition, it appears as though she died about six months ago,” Gwinnett County Police Department Cpl. Michele Pihera wrote in a news release.

No Gwinnett County Police missing person case matched the remains, so investigators are looking to surrounding departments.
