Sheriffs officials investigate dog fighting

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating possible dog fighting activity after the carcass of a pit bull was discovered Wednesday on a Tulip Drive lot in Gainesville.

Code Enforcement Director Andre Niles said his office was contacted after neighbors noticed buzzards flying around the area.

Col. Jeff Strickland of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said there have been no prior reports of dog fighting in the area.

"We are looking into it at this time," Strickland said.

Hall County Commissioner Ashley Bell, who represents the area, said he has heard complaints from residents of buzzards flying around the dead end street.

The site of the former Maple Valley Country Club has become a magnet for illegal dumping and Bell said he worries that some of the refuse — such as the dead dog — points to illegal activities.

Anybody with information should contact the sheriff’s office at 770-531-6879.
