Security at Gainesville High School remained heightened Thursday after a threat was found written on a bathroom wall Wednesday.
Though school officials believe the threat to be a prank, Superintendent Wanda Creel said they weren’t taking any chances.
“We are continuing throughout the day to have heightened security,” Creel said. “We are continuing to check as students come in and out of the building and we checked all book bags this morning for every student. We had two access points into the building and we have teachers at the doors checking as people come in and out, moving amongst the campus.”
All students, employees and visitors were asked to have identification with them as well for verification.
The threat was found on a boys’ bathroom wall by a student Wednesday afternoon after most students were already gone for the day.
K-9 police dog units from Hall, Forsyth, Rabun and Habersham counties were brought in Wednesday to sweep the grounds and nothing unusual or dangerous was found.
Creel and school administrators would not disclose the nature or wording of the threat Thursday, but they will offer a reward for information that leads to an arrest. The amount of the reward is still being determined.
Anyone with information on the threat may call the anonymous Gainesville police tip line at 770-533-5873.
Creel said the priority at the high school is to educate students in a safe environment.
“We’re just working to make sure that our students and our employees are safe,” she said.
