Sammy Smith, member of the Gainesville City Schools Board of Education, has been named to the University of Georgia’s Board of Visitors.

He was named to the group for a two-year term.

The board serves as ambassadors for the school.

Smith, founder of Rainmaker Public Relations in 1996, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from UGA.

He is a former public affairs director for Fieldale Farms and was an aide to former U.S. Rep. Ed Jenkins. He also is a former teacher.

Smith is a graduate of Gainesville High School. He has been on the school board since 2008.

About 25 people are appointed to the UGA board each year, Smith said.
