A Talmo woman died Thursday afternoon when a car experiencing a mechanical problem rolled over her, according to Georgia State Patrol.

Julene Nix, 64, was transported Thursday to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Nix was the passenger in a 1998 Mercury Tracer headed northbound on U.S. 129/Athens Highway at Sosbee Road in Talmo.

State patrol said the vehicle “began to experience some type of mechanical difficulty, causing the vehicle to lose power.” The driver, Tracy Cooper, 51, of Bethlehem, attempted to steer the vehicle off the road onto Sosbee Road.

Nix exited the car and began pushing the vehicle out of the roadway, state patrol said.

“When Ms. Cooper put the vehicle into neutral and let off of the brake, the vehicle rolled backward, striking Ms. Nix and rolling over her,” state patrol wrote in an email.

A passerby helped to move the vehicle off of Nix.

No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
