Road crews monitoring winter weather in mountains

Winter weather affected roads in the Gaps of Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White counties this morning, but snow has stopped falling and crews are now just monitoring the situation. The Georgia Department of Transportation was battling the winter weather as of about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, plowing snow and spreading material to provide traction and break up icing. Affected areas included the following: Ga. 11/U.S. 129/U.S. 19 over Blood Mountain in Union and Lumpkin Ga. 180 West toward Suches Ga. 11/U.S. 129 North toward North Carolina “Please continue to be vigilant as you drive especially in the higher elevations of Dawson, Habersham, Rabun, Towns, Union and White counties," said Brent Cook, Georgia DOT District Engineer serving Northeast Georgia, in a news release.
