Winter weather affected roads in the Gaps of Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White counties this morning, but snow has stopped falling and crews are now just monitoring the situation.

The Georgia Department of Transportation was battling the winter weather as of about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, plowing snow and spreading material to provide traction and break up icing. Affected areas included the following:

  • Ga. 11/U.S. 129/U.S. 19 over Blood Mountain in Union and Lumpkin
  • Ga. 180 West toward Suches
  • Ga. 11/U.S. 129 North toward North Carolina

“Please continue to be vigilant as you drive especially in the higher elevations of Dawson, Habersham, Rabun, Towns, Union and White counties," said Brent Cook, Georgia DOT District Engineer serving Northeast Georgia, in a news release. "Georgia DOT will continue to monitor roadway conditions and resume plowing and spreading materials if needed.”
