The intersection of Prior Street and Jesse Jewell Parkway will be improved thanks to a $375,000 grant from the state.
Prior Street will receive northbound and southbound left-turn lanes at the intersection, which is near The Longstreet Clinic and Church Street Manor apartments. The project also will include traffic signal improvements and the addition of a sidewalk on one side of the road.
Gainesville’s public works director Chris Rotalsky said the intersection experiences high traffic due to its proximity to residential areas, Brenau University, Northeast Georgia Medical Center and other medical offices.
“It kind of over time has developed into a bit of a pinch point at that location. … It’s just a project that we think is very needed for that area,” Rotalsky said.
Construction would start in spring 2019 at the earliest, according to Gainesville Senior Civil Engineer Matt Tarver.
The project is funded by the State Road and Tollway Authority’s Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, which awarded a total of $18.1 million for 19 projects around the state, according to a Tuesday, June 19, news release from Gov. Nathan Deal’s office.
