Poultry company looks to add 200 jobs next year
Plans include rezoning property, expanding

A newly remodeled poultry plant in South Hall County plans to employ 200 more workers in 2013, and additional plans for expanding its operations could begin in as little as three years.

According to a letter filed with the Hall County Planning Department, Gold Creek Foods LLC began the remodeling of Gold Creek Processing on Webb Girth Road in the early summer and was operational by Nov. 1.

The facility is on the site of an old Pilgrim’s Pride hatchery, according to the minutes of a May 7 meeting with the Hall County Planning Commission in which the company sought approval for the project.

The building, which was run down and vandalized, had to be remodeled to suit the company’s needs. It required a “significant amount of rehab” to the driveway, parking lot and lighting, according to the minutes.

“We have invested over $2 million in renovating and updating this property,” Mark Sosebee, CEO and co-founder, wrote in the letter.

The facility cuts and sizes chicken. No animals are killed on the site.

Sosebee said the processing plant began sizing chicken tenders on Oct. 29 and moves an average of 363,000 pounds of chicken per week.

The plant currently employs nearly 160 people on two shifts working Monday through Saturday.

“We are looking to provide an additional 200 jobs in 2013 and get into the value-added business by cooking poultry products within the next three to five years,” Sosebee wrote.

Gold Creek Foods also has locations in Dawsonville and Dahlonega.

Sosebee said the company employs nearly 900 people working three shifts throughout the week.

The letter filed is requesting the Hall County Planning Department to rezone two properties adjacent to its new facility. The company is in the process of purchasing two lots at 2338 and 2360 Webb Girth Road.

The request asks for the properties, which are currently zoned Agricultural Residential-III, to be rezoned to Planned Industrial District.

The two houses on the properties would not be torn down.

“We are expecting to use one house for security and the other for job training and additional office space. We also plan to use additional real estate to assist overflow parking,” Sosebee wrote.

The rezoning request will be considered by the Hall County Planning Commission at its 5:15 p.m. Dec. 17 meeting.
