Portion of Memorial Park Drive closes due to collapsed roadway

Part of Memorial Park Drive closed Wednesday after a portion of the road collapsed. Motorists should expect delays in the area today as repairs are made.

"We've got a lot of water moving around this culvert for some reason," said Hall County Public Works Project Manager Kem Smith. "We've got the water department out here with us trying to check out their line. We don't know if it's coming from a broken water main or just water that's just detoured around this culvert from all the rain and snow we've had."

Gainesville and Hall County road crews will continue work today in the area between Gainesville Fire Station No. 4 and Centennial Drive. Beginning at 9 a.m., one to two lanes will be closed, requiring lane shifts for drivers.

The road closing prevented Lyman Elementary School buses from traveling Memorial Park Drive to Browns Bridge Road after school, said David Childers, transportation coordinator.

All buses turned right out of the school and used Atlanta Highway at the end of Memorial Park or side streets, such as Titshaw Drive, to deliver students back home.
