A man brought back to Hall County from Pennsylvania is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in 2017, police said.

Travis Shane Burnette, 22, is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated sexual battery, rape and sexual battery. He was booked Wednesday, June 6, in to the Hall County Jail, where he remains.

Oakwood Police Investigator Todd Templeton said Burnette’s arrest “was the result of a sexual assault that occurred in January 2017 in Oakwood.”

“The suspect reportedly strangled the victim during the assault,” Templeton wrote in an email.

Templeton said arrest warrants were obtained in October. The alleged victim and Burnette were familiar with one another at the time.

Burnette’s attorney Tracy Teiger said he had it “on good information that Mr. Burnette is not responsible for the charges.” Teiger said he would be conducting his own investigation.
