A woman has been charged with allegedly leaving four children under the age of 12 alone at a hotel, police said.

Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish said the officers discovered the children had been left alone without food for a day.

Selene Flores was charged with first-degree child cruelty and booked July 15 in to the Hall County Jail, where she remains.

“Flores left four children under the age of 12 alone at the Budgetel hotel where they were living.  The investigation showed that the children had been left alone for over 24 hours,” Parrish wrote in an email.

The hotel staff and patrons reported it to police. The children were put in the custody of the Division of Family and Children Services.

“I will note that when our officers discovered these children had been left alone and not eaten in a day, the officers immediately went and purchased meals for the kids. These cases are always difficult for our officers because they prey on the most vulnerable,” Parrish said.

Attorney Larry Duttweiler did not comment on the allegations.

There is an immigration hold for Flores.
