In the wake of Gainesville Police Chief Brian Kelly’s sudden resignation Aug. 29 following an inquiry into his leadership by city management, it became clear morale among officers had bottomed out. But beyond concerns about Kelly’s management style, other factors outside his control certainly contributed to morale issues. Salary and benefits paid to patrol officers are perhaps the biggest reason for the erosion of morale and resulting attrition at the department.
