One person was seriously injured Friday, June 29, after a car struck a telephone pole on Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville between Skate Country and Papa John’s.

A witness said the car, driven by a woman, struck the curb while driving north on Thompson Bridge Road, sending it toward the telephone pole that broke in half. The silver, 4-door Ford SUV flipped and landed on its roof as debris from inside the car was strewn nearby. The same witness reported the driver was ejected through the front windshield.

“I ran out there and she was unresponsive, laying on her stomach,” said Trey McKeithen, general manager at Papa John’s on Thompson Bridge Road. “I went into my truck to grab a pillow to support her head. By the time I came back, she was already flipped over on her back.”

Gainesville Fire Department spokesman Keith Smith said “a second vehicle tried to go around the accident scene.” The vehicle was momentarily entangled in the phone line, causing both lanes of traffic to close.

AT&T linemen were on the scene and used a bucket truck to raise the phone line over the road to allow traffic to pass in the left-hand lane.

The crash was reported before 2:30 p.m.

“My driver pretty much saw everything,” McKeithen said. “He said ‘Bro, Trey, you might need to get out here and help this lady.’ So I ran out the door and he called dispatch.”

According to McKeithen, he was the first one to the driver of the SUV. Shortly thereafter, others stopped to help until emergency responders made it to the scene.

“I just hope she’s all right,” McKeithen said.
