Police officers shot a man who confronted them with a knife Saturday night when they responded to a domestic disturbance call in Buford, authorities said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident involving Gwinnett County Police officers and suspect Stephan Richardson, 23, who remains at Gwinnett Medical Center receiving treatment.

No officers were injured at the incident in the 1400 block of Castleberry Drive, according to Gwinnett Police.

GBI spokesman Bahan Rich said Richardson lived at the residence where the incident occurred.

“While on scene, the officers were confronted inside by a male armed with a knife. During this confrontation the officers shot the male several times,” Gwinnett Police wrote in a news release. “The officers rendered first aid and the male was transported to the hospital via Gwinnett Fire Services.”

Once the GBI completes its independent investigation, it will turn over the case to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.
