More than a dozen Gainesville Police officers went through bike patrol certification last week.
“It’s one of Chief (Carol) Martin’s efforts to enhance our community policing,” said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook.
The officers were tested Friday to see if they are able to ride while performing all of their required tasks on the bicycle.
“People may assume that it’s just a bicycle and it’s as simple as getting on it. There’s much more to it than that. Officers must be able to perform any and all law enforcement duties,” Sgt. Holbrook said.
The certification is based on a national standard that 15 officers tested on Friday.
