OAKWOOD — Oakwood has joined forces with the newly annexed Tanners Creek Business Park to recruit more light industrial/office-type businesses to the South Hall city.
In an agreement approved by City Council on Monday, 24.36 acres in the city’s 32-acre industrial park on W. White Road “would be oriented toward” the Tanners Creek park, which runs along Thurmon Tanner Parkway.
“We would try to market it jointly with them,” through the park’s real estate group, Radial Property Group, City Manager Stan Brown said.
“(Tanners Creek) has been successful and we think we’ve been successful with our industrial development investments, and we see a good synergy and a good partnership here.”
The city opened a new 32-acre industrial park two years ago off W. White, which leads to H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway and then Thurmon Tanner Parkway at the proposed Exit 14 interchange off Interstate 985.
So far, the only tenant is the city’s public works department, which was moved from Railroad Street in the downtown area.
“The more acreage we can have that can be accessed from Thurmon Tanner, as a community, will be better for all of us,” Brown said. “... We would try to look at trying to be more in line with the office park/light industrial uses we see over in Tanners Creek.”
Industrial park property that’s closer to W. White Road is not part of the agreement and will be reserved for heavier, more industrial types of uses.
In April, Oakwood City Council voted to annex 71.45 undeveloped acres in the Tanners Creek park. Most of the property was designated for light industrial uses.
The Oakwood Development Authority is set to meet Thursday night to also consider the agreement.
Tanners Creek has seen a fair bit of activity lately.
Earlier this month, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, along with other government officials, attended a groundbreaking ceremony in the business park for the new Atlanta Biologicals headquarters.
The German-based biotechnology manufacturer is moving to a new 36,000-square-foot facility, which will serve as the headquarters for the company’s North American operations.
The headquarters is expected to open in 2013 and attract some 30 skilled jobs.
Also, construction is under way on a 16,000-square-foot clinic on Tanners Creek Drive, off Thurmon Tanner Parkway and just north of H.F. Reed. The estimated completion of the building is April 2013.
