Law enforcement is warning of a new rendition of a scam involving Georgia Power impostors.

Oakwood Police said the department is investigating a scam from the fake “disconnection billing department” that is “demanding immediate payment via credit card over the phone,” Sgt. Danny Sridej wrote in a news release.

“The suspect also gives instructions to the victim to go to a local store to purchase a prepaid debit card and provide the card number over the telephone to avoid disconnection of service,” the sergeant said.

Sridej said the department has already been contacted by one business that was targeted by the scam, but the person did not lose any money to the scammer.

The potential victim was asked for $327, but no money changed hands after she went to the Gainesville Georgia Power office, Sridej said.

Sridej said the scam artist’s telephone number is 404-462-1062.

The sergeant urged all citizens to not give personal information over the phone and call Georgia Power at 888-660-5890 if one has questions about service.
