• McEver Road at Mundy Mill Road

Nine area intersections are being upgraded to become more pedestrian-friendly, with a couple of them — particularly busy Atlanta Highway at Memorial Park Drive — getting left-turn signals.

Work is “wrapping up” on the $1.4 million project, which targets several major road crossings throughout Hall County, said Teri Pope, Georgia Department of Transportation district spokeswoman.

Basically, the work will bring the intersections up to federal Americans with Disabilities Act standards, with pedestrian signals, crosswalk striping and wheelchair ramps.

Also, the crossing will meet transportation standards, including installation of new equipment, such as LED signal heads that are more energy efficient and can be seen easier in low-light conditions such as rain, fog and snow.

The intersections “were grouped together based on ...age of signal heads, computer equipment and maintenance problems of the equipment,” Pope said.

The Atlanta Highway/Memorial Park intersection also will get a left-turn arrow for motorists traveling north on Atlanta Highway and turning onto Memorial Park Drive.

That particular improvement is key as Memorial Park Drive serves as a major connector between Atlanta Highway and Browns Bridge Road/Ga. 369. Also, the intersection is a couple miles from Interstate 985.

“I think it will help (traffic flow),” said Bill Stroud, resident of nearby Chicopee Mill Village. “And I think the addition of crosswalks will also make people realize where the stop bar is (striped on the pavement) for left turners.”

A left-turn lane was added to the intersection a couple of years ago as part of a $215,000 project.

Another intersection that has gotten left-turn lanes and turn arrows is Cleveland Highway at Dahlonega Highway/Ga. 52.

While the project’s overall completion date was Dec. 31, some work still remains.

Wrongly sized mast arm support poles were delivered to Atlanta Highway/Ga. 13 at Memorial Park Drive and Thompson Bridge Road/Ga. 60 at Mount Vernon Road/Ga. 283, Pope said.

“New ones are being made now,” she said.

And utility work is causing delays at Cleveland Highway/Ga. 11 at Clarks Bridge Road/Ga. 284, Pope said.

The roads involved in the work are all highly traveled, cutting through some of the area’s busiest sections.

For example, the project at Atlanta Highway and Phil Niekro Boulevard is near downtown Flowery Branch and where the South Hall city is building the Lights Ferry Connector between Atlanta Highway and McEver Road.
