The Edmondson-Telford Center for Children is gearing up for its 11th annual Phil Niekro Golf Classic on Thursday.

The event is accompanied by the Niekro’s Nine Raffle, now in its third year.

"It’s been very successful and helps get the community involved," said Jane Carpenter, programs director for the center.

All proceeds from the event go toward the center, which has served abused and neglected children since 1997. A portion of the proceeds will go directly toward construction of a new facility on Washington Street, which will start in January.

The golf tournament will be played on two fields at Chateau Elan. Tee-off is at 10 a.m. While this year’s tournament is sold out, Carpenter said those interested in playing next year can contact the center to be put on their mailing list.

Anybody can purchase raffle tickets for $10 apiece until Thursday morning. There is no limit to how many tickets you can purchase, and you don’t have to be present at the raffle to win.

Among the prizes: a box for 16 people at an Atlanta Braves game next year, with an appearance by Niekro; a 14-karat white gold brilliant cut diamond pendant and a week at a beachfront condominium in Destin, Fla. Niekro pitched for the Braves from 1966 to 1983, and won 318 games in his Hall of Fame career.
