A new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Atlanta is being ordained at 2 p.m. Wednesday, and Hall County Catholics can livestream the ceremony.
Bishop-elect Bernard “Ned” Shlesinger III has been appointed the auxiliary bishop for the archdiocese covering Georgia’s northern half by Pope Francis.
Shlesinger was named to the position on May 15, according to an announcement from the archdiocese.
A native of northern Virginia, Shlesinger spent seven years as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, most of it spent flying the C-130E Hercules out of a base in North Carolina. He retired from active duty in 1990 and was ordained six years later, according to the announcement.
He was transferred to Atlanta from Philadelphia, where he taught in the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Along with fellow Auxiliary Bishop Luis Zarama, Schlesinger will assist Archbishop Wilton Gregory in running the diocese.
Shlesinger’s ordination is set for 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King, located at 2699 Peachtree Road.
