New bridge over Chattahoochee means all-day detour Tuesday in Helen

On Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to close the Main Street bridge over the Chattahoochee River in downtown Helen so crews can install a new pedestrian bridge.

"The bridge will be delivered to the site in two pieces. It will be bolted together on site with 225 bolts and then installed on the support structures built earlier this year," said District Engineer Russell McMurry.

Once the $279,000 bridge is installed, crews will pour a 5-inch concrete layer that will require about 30 days to harden before use.

Weather permitting, the new bridge will be open in June.

On Tuesday, a detour route will take traffic from Main Street to Edelweiss Strasse and Chattahoochee Strasse.

The detour is set to last from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
