A scene from a major motion picture about soldiers coping with post-traumatic stress disorder was filmed Monday in downtown Gainesville.
With Gainesville patrol cars blocking streets, a crew filmed the scene from “Thank You for Your Service,” which is being produced by Amblin Entertainment, co-founded by Steven Spielberg, and will be released through Universal Pictures.
The scene depicts an Iraq War veteran, portrayed by actor Joe Cole, returning home and finding that his wife has left him. He goes on to confront her in a bank, film publicist David Linck said.
A crew filmed scenes on Washington Street behind the federal courthouse and in the old Regions Bank.
In a larger sense, the movie focuses on delays in veterans getting treatment through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Linck said.
Actors involved in the project include Miles Teller, Haley Bennett and Amy Schumer.
Also, Jason Hall, who wrote the controversial 2014 film “American Sniper,” is making his directorial debut with the film, according to IMDb.com.
The movie, based on a nonfiction book by the same name, could be released by the end of 2016, Linck said.
The Regions Bank, which is near the Hall County Courthouse, was recently used in the filming of a PlayStation Network show.
And more Hollywood could be on the way.
“The contract has not been signed, but we do have another film production that may be coming … in the next month or April,” said Heather Taylor, listing agent and property manager for the bank property, managed by 111 Green Street LLC.
“The crews (say they) love working with Gainesville,” she added. “Even though we are outside their typical geographic area — they like to stay within 25 miles of downtown Atlanta — (they say) it’s worth the drive up here.”
