A mother and her boyfriend were arrested last week on felony child cruelty charges after the woman’s 3-year-old son allegedly ingested methamphetamine in their home.
Lt. Scott Ware, spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement that a grandmother took the child to Northeast Georgia Medical Center after the July 23 incident where the boy tested positive for the drug. The child was treated and released. Ware said investigators do not know how the child ingested the meth.
The mother, Brenda Chadale Jones, 28, and Joshua James Starley, 31, both of High View Court in Gainesville, were each charged with one count of of second-degree child cruelty, according to Ware. Starley has been in Hall County Jail since he was booked on other charges July 23. Jones was booked into the jail Saturday, according to jail records.
Jones has a $10,000 conditional bond and is scheduled for a committal hearing Aug. 31, according to an official in Hall County Magistrate Court. Starley is being held without bond on the charge and has waived his committal hearing.
The meth was allegedly left unsecured by Jones and Starley before being ingested by the child, according to the statement. Ware said the Hall County Division of Family and Children Services is also involved in the investigation.
Sheriff’s investigators obtained warrants for Jones and Starley on Aug. 10, Ware said.
This case remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
