Monday drowning victim identified as Buford man
Lake Lanier

Forsyth County authorities identified the man Wednesday, Aug. 1, who drowned two days earlier at West Bank Park on Lake Lanier.

Sheriff’s office Cpl. Doug Rainwater said Ali Ismaili, 23, of Buford, was found underwater and taken to Northside Hospital in Cumming, where he was pronounced dead.

Forsyth County deputy coroner Paul Holbrook said Tuesday, July 31, they were trying to notify Ismaili’s family in Afghanistan.

“The two gentlemen that he was swimming with said that he had jumped off of one of the railings into the water,” Holbrook said Tuesday.

The two other men tried to find the victim before calling authorities.

Forsyth and Gwinnett fire personnel were dispatched to the park at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, and were able to quickly locate the victim, according to Division Chief Jason Shivers.

Shivers said the victim was located in shallow water very near to the location where he was last seen.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Northside Hospital in Cumming. Mark McKinnon, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirmed that the victim did not survive.
