A man was taken into custody Tuesday at McEver Arts Academy when a “domestic dispute of some kind” erupted, according to Hall Superintendent Will Schofield.
The school was placed on lockdown about 12:15 p.m. when the man showed up at school — after the school was notified of a temporary protective order against the man.
Schofield said, “Something happened at home that spilled over into the school.”
The man is the father of two children at the school. The school was notified about the protective order about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
No charges have been filed against the man, but he was served a temporary protective order and issued a criminal trespass warning.
Schofield said the man was “emotional” about getting a student out of school. He added, “The school system was put in a very difficult position.”
Schofield said school officials called the Hall County Sheriff’s Office “and in about a minute they were here.”
The temporary order prohibited the father from being on the school grounds. When he showed up, school officials refused to allow him to enter.
Four patrol cars responded to the request, a school press release said.
Deputies talked with the man on the phone and he agreed to meet them off campus. He was in custody by 12:45 p.m., the release said.
The superintendent said the incident was over and “we’re having a normal school day.”
“We never saw any weapons; we never saw any guns,” Schofield said.
According to the release, students were never in any danger.
Schofield said the school staff and sheriff’s officers “did everything just right.”
He added that money the system has spent on security to limit access to schools “just paid off today.”
The man had not been identified by the Sheriff’s Office by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
