May Day celebration postponed to tonight

The Genesis Council, a project of the Newtown Florist Club, postponed its 2014 Sankofa May Day celebration from Saturday morning to 6:30 p.m.

The location of the event has been changed from Rock Creek Park near downtown to the Fair Street Neighborhood Center, 715 Fair St. in Gainesville.

The biannual celebration honors May Day queens and princesses in Hall County. This year’s queens include Jacqueline Hopkins, Vanessa Ellison and Belinda Dickey. A cotillion will also be held tonight.

Originally formed to provide funeral wreaths, the Newtown Florist Club now promotes youth development and social justice. The Genesis Council carries on this tradition by focusing on female role models in the community.

Queens are appointed by the council and princesses are selected by their schools or churches to represent on the May Day court.

Sankofa, a West African term that means “return and go get them,” is the motto for the event, relating how important it is to inspire young women to take on leadership roles.
