Witnesses told authorities someone in dark clothing was messing with a car Thursday on Mill Street before it caught on fire, according to a report.

The car was reported on fire around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Gainesville Fire responded to an alarm regarding a vehicle fire with a structure fire in the 1000 block of Mill Street.

“The vehicle was more than 50 percent involved,” according to the report.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, but could not find the tag or VIN number intact on the vehicle.

“(Engine 21) found the owner’s family and a witness that stated someone was messing around the car dressed in all black clothing with a hoodie before the vehicle was on fire,” according to the report.

Gainesville Fire Marshal Chad Payne said the case is still under investigation with a “vague description of a possible suspect.”

Firefighters determined only the car was on fire in the street “with no other exposures around,” according to the report.
